Pre-production processes

The main processes in the development stage are:
  • Ideas being generated
  • Pre-visualisation images are being drawn
  • Financing is sought
  • Production company is sought
  • Treatment (project outline) is written
The main processes in the pre-production stage are:
  • Getting the rights the material (example Harry Potter getting permission of J.K Rowling)
  • Storyboards are designed
  • Screenplay is written
  • Studio time is booked
  • Locations are scouted and secured
  • Auditions are held
  • Actors and crew are hired
  • Rehearsals take place
  • Sets are build
  • Costumes designed and fitted
The development stage is carefully done because it is making sure that the film can be green lit and start to be prepared for production. The first thing that needs to be done is generating ideas because otherwise their will be no possibility of a film being made without a seed of an idea. This leads to having a treatment which is a clear project outline which is written this will be used in the pitch, as will the pre-visualisation images which would be drawn because this will show that the idea is blossoming and the team know what they need and what they want it to look like. Then the money needs to be sought and so does the production company these will be where the pitch comes into play because the team will need to persuade them to take the risk and create this film or fund it.

The pre-production stage is also very carefully completed because it is crucial to get the right people for this particular film. The first thing that will be done when the team is given the green light will be securing the rights to this particular piece of material this means if the idea has come from a book then the team needs to get the rights and permission from the writer of the book to use their story. This is very important because the film can't go ahead without that permission and agreement set in stone. Then the storyboards needs to be designed and perfected. This is important because it gives the film a very fine look and feel to how the team want it to look a certain way. The storyboards will be seen by actors and lighting crew and camera crew because it is just for the visual element crew and the sound element crew, the sound element crew would need to see it because it is commonly known they an animatic which requires sound and visual. Then the screenplay has to be written which then distributed to many involved in the filming including actors, costume designer, lighting technician and there are many more people that need to see it but it is not necessary for everyone to see it. Then other things are done such as location scouted and secured, studio time is booked and sets are built these are just a few things that seem small but play a big part in the pre-production of any film. Then the main item is getting people auditioned and then picking people for the roles and beginning rehearsals. This is important because the team want the right people for the film with a certain look to them and a certain way the person will act will play a role in if they get the part. When the cast and crew is hired this means then costumes can be designed and fitted to the size of the actors and actresses chosen for the film.
