Logistics of production

Logistics

It is essential to budget and pre-plan expenditure for a media production because there are so many people involved and it needs to plan to the minute and the hour to make the production run smoothly and be kept on track. A few things that need to be considered is paying cast, crew, technicians, editors and so on something else that should also be considered is being in the right location and having everyone there and ready. The risk of any media product is very high but it is even higher with a film production because money can run out or people can drop out mid production, however the money is all upfront which means all the money is payed out before one ticket for the film is sold.

Unforeseen circumstances that can affect production

Unforeseen circumstances that can occur are things like Paul Walker who died on the 30th of November 2013 and Fast and Furious 7 was released in 2015 with Paul in certain scene in the films. This is unfortunate and was not pre-planned for an actor to die in an accident not related to the filming. However overnight a plan had to be made to what was going to happen for the future of this film and how it would work.  However a James Bond film hit a hiccup which was that they went to a location to film and there was no snow so they had to have a plan B which was to get snow from the mountains and spread it out where they needed it.

Pre-production logistics

The preparation for the film which requires quick but delicate planning for everything. This requires a lot of organisation because there is so many people involved. For example to use the story to Harry Potter they needed to secure the rights to the story before they begin looking for cast or anything like that securing the rights is one of the first things done. Another part of pre-production logistics is hiring a screenplay writer because that is different person to the story writer. There will also be people looking for the locations that are needed for example the film Jumanji they had to find the perfect place to film all the jungle scene which they used multiple different locations for this film such as Kualoa Ranch, Hilo Hawaii waterfall, Wiamea Valley and a few other locations these needed to be searched for and agreed upon. Another part of logistics for pre-production is looking for cast which is very time consuming, this is because this requires deciding who would be good for the main roles and then getting in touch with their agents and making an agreement or coming to a decision of having to look for someone else to play the role they want. It is also important to hold auditions for the smaller parts for the film and then choosing between who have auditioned, however this does take a long period of time so this should be overlapping with the screenplay being written so it can all be ready for a specific time. The crew also needs a lot of thought going into it because they need to decide if they want to pay the best at what they do or have someone who isn't the best but is good and will give them the result they want no questions asked because the person they might want might not be available for the next six months or something like that.

Things that can go wrong are things such as they don't find a location in time which means the production is held up while the people are still going to find the perfect location.

Production logistics

The production for the film which requires someone to plan each day telling people where they need to be and what they needed to be doing. This means that organisation is key and so crucial to make sure that money is not wasted when it does need to be. The detail that has been put into each day which is on a  daily call sheet which is given to everyone each day which maybe multiple pages long for the day that is ahead of them. The daily call sheet will explain where everyone needs to be at what specific time and what outfit they need to be wearing. However there is a certain responsibility to be on time and know there lines and where they need to be stood and what they need to be doing.

During the day if someone is running late or isn't out of costume and makeup in time for their set then this means that everything is delayed. Then that leads to a loss of time to do other scenes, this also means that the location isn't booked for the overrun which means they can't finish the filming and will have to pay for another day for that location.

Post production logistics

The organisation of the musicians needs planning months in advance. The special effects needs to be organised because for example the Jurassic World special effects would have to planned in the correct order because a dinosaur would need to be made and created first then if they wanted there to be rain on top of the dinosaur then that would need to be done after the dinosaur is made and finished. Marketing is also a big part of budgeting which seems to be one of the last things that are done which also requires extremely detailed planning and budgeting which needs to be done well.

An issue that can occur during this part of production is there is not enough money to make the post production lift of which means they need to get money from other sources or don't do the marketing which could lead to the film not doing very well, or lead to it going straight to DVD or BluRay.
