Finance and Funding for parts of Media

Where does funding for the following come from?
  • Films
Independent films are funded by Crowdfunding, finding investors, self-finance or get a grant. However Crowdfunding has become increasingly more popular with independent films. Crowdfunding is when raising money from a large number of people who each give a small amount which is usually done on the internet. A film that is an independent film is Trainspotting which went quite big which made the smaller companies bigger a few of these companies are Channel Four Films, Figment Films and The Noel Gay Motion Picture Company.

Films are funded by film companies, companies get their money from the pre-sales which comes form the script and cast specifically. Then when the film is going to be screened in the cinema money comes from the amount of people who go to watch it. Then money finally comes in from the DVD and Blu-ray sales. A film that is a blockbuster film is Captain America: The First Avenger which is created by bigger companies such as Paramount Pictures, Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Studios.
  • TV Programs on Commercial channels - Terrestrial and Satellite/PPV and Cable
Terrestrial - is TV that came through the normal aerial with no extra charge necessary. Which is the normal few channels.

PPV - Paid-Per-View programs will gain money back form each watch of the program initially the program. Netflix is part of this category because you have to pay for the subscription which is payed monthly.

Commercial channels get their money from the advertisements that bands pay to have them on the channel the only exception is BBC channels as they don't have adverts. They also have the sponsors for certain programs for example at the moment for the program Coronation Street their sponsor is Comparethemarket.com this is also brings money in for the TV programs. If they wanted to sell a specific program they could sell it to other countries to get more money and then it would be screened in those other countries for a certain amount of money.
  • TV Programs on BBC -
TV programmes on BBC channels get money from people paying for their TV license which pays for the running of the BBC programs. The BBC makes funds and money by their sales. BBC also owns BBC America which means they have different viewers and more money coming in. Sometimes BBC will also make a program and sell it to another countries which makes them even more money to make more programs. For example Eastenders is one of these programs that is made by the BBC.
